The Weather Channel Interactive

For several years Weather Channel Interactive has provided consumers with unique, customizable products such as Desktop Weather, a clickable icon-based tool that delivers customized, up-to-the-minute weather reports directly to users’ computer desktops. But as good as it was, in late 2004 the Desktop Weather division set out to develop a more personalized, relevant, cutting edge user experience. And they decided to do it all within a matter of months.

That’s when they also decided to enlist the help of Magnitude 9.6.

The goal was to incorporate an array of new lifestyle features such as sports, events, business and leisure travel, specific allergy reports – a total of 9 new channels in all. Based on user profiles and usage, Weather Channel Interactive also asked us to add customization flexibility, relevant advertising, and co-branding opportunities to the interface. All while keeping it simple and easy to use.

Within two months, Magnitude developed a design utilizing a set of User Interface Best Practices and The Weather Channel’s branding guidelines. Weather Channel Interactive then validated our approach and its usability by conducted focus group testing throughout the U.S. The results were overwhelmingly positive, allowing the Weather Channel Interactive group to continue technical development so they could meet their scheduled release date of November/December 2004.
